Sheriff’s Memorial Torch Run To Cover 339 Miles

sheriffbadgeRunners, bikers, walkers and joggers will take to the streets today to start a two-day relay in honor of local law enforcement officers who gave their lives for the protection of our communities.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department 2010 Memorial Torch Relay Run started at 9 a.m. today and will end Sunday morning. The relay run covers 339 miles, beginning at Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building, traveling nonstop through the day and night to each mainland Sheriff’s station.

The first Santa Clarita Valley leg of the run will begin at 6:55 p.m. at The Old Road and Pico Canyon Road. Participants will pass the memorial to Deputy Jake Kuredjian in Stevenson Ranch as well as the site where Deputy Cameron Glover was killed in an off-duty collision April 28, ending at the Santa Clarita Valley station on Magic Mountain Parkway.

Santa Clarita station personnel will run four additional legs on Saturday:

At approximately 8 p.m., runners will depart from Santa Clarita Valley station and run along Valencia Boulevard/Soledad Canyon Road to Whites Canyon Road, where they are expected to arrive around 9 p.m.

At approximately 9 p.m., runners will leave Soledad Canyon Road at Whites Canyon and run to Sierra Highway (yellow 50 MPH sign), arriving at about 9:50 p.m.

At approximately 9:50 p.m., runners will leave Sierra Highway at the yellow 50 MPH sign) and run north to Sierra Highway at Center Street.

At approximately 10:35 p.m., runners will leave Sierra Highway at Center Street traveling north to the 8400 block of Sierra Highway near the Palmdale Sheriff’s station.

Cheering, flag waving and enthusiastic encouragement from observers along the route is always appreciated.

The torch will be used Wednesday during the 41st annual Los Angeles County Peace Officers Memorial at the STARS Center in Whittier. Sheriff Lee Baca will light a candle on the Memorial Wall at the training center in memory of the fallen officers.
