This week I decided to review “She’s Out of My League”, a comedy that ended up being more then I thought it would be. Not only is it laugh out loud funny but it also touches on some harsh realities that come with a couple where one of them is overachieving.
The overachieving party is Jay Baruchal’s (“Knocked Up”, “Tropic Thunder” “Million Dollar Baby”) Kirk, a dorky airport security guard, who ends up finding the lost cell phone of Molly (Alice Eve), who is way too good looking for Kirk. She is so grateful that he found her phone that she treats him to dinner and is surprised to find out that she is attracted to him. She wonders if it’s because he’s safe or because he’s a legitimately nice guy. That’s where the fun of the movie comes in. They are both stunned by their relationship and are constantly getting bad advice from their friends on how to handle it. Kirk’s friends, Stainer (T.J. Miller), the overly handsome Jack (Mike Vogel), and the sweet married guy Devon (Nate Torrance), tell him to dump her because she’s going to realize that she is way too good for him. Molly is also getting bad advice from her best friend Patty (Krysten Ritter), who basically tells her that she is only with him because he’s safe.
I liked this movie a lot, and while I enjoyed the crude guy humor, the conversations between Kirk and his friends are quite accurate. I’ve been there for the overachieving-girlfriend-conversation a few times in my life. Believe me it can be brutal but quite fun. Stainer has no filter and is probably the guy with the best lines, he almost steals the movie. However, the married Devon is my favorite character; he’s the only one who gives advice that is sound and logical. All of the performances in this movie are great, and while it does end like most romantic comedies, I have to say that I highly recommend it. It makes a good date movie both guys and girls can enjoy.
If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea then there is also Matt Damon’s military action film “Green Zone” or Forrest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia in the comedy “Our Family Wedding”, or “Twilight’s” Robert Pattinson in the romantic film “Remember Me”.
Thank You for reading and stay tuned as I am visited by “Repo Men”.
