Sierra Vista Jumps For Guinness World Record

At 9:00 this morning Sierra Vista Middle School’s Physical Education department joined approximately 80,000 people in attempting to break a Guinness World Record. With the help of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (CAHPERD), Sierra Vista and thousands of other Californians were trying to get the most people jumping rope at the same time. This record was previously held by Australia, with 59,000 people.

Besides Sierra Vista, schools all across California participated in the activity.

Attempting to break this record was no easy feat. Coordinating all the different locations and having Guinness World Record judges on hand at each site required a major group effort. Jamba Juice pitched in by providing some of the funds necessary to supply jump ropes for all the students participating. On top of the planning and fundraising, there were specific rules to follow while jumping as well.

“If a student messed up, they had ten seconds to re-start again.” said George Velarde, head of the Physical Education Department at Sierra Vista.

This world record attempt was inspired by CAHPERD’s “Jump Rope for Heart” program. CAHPERD has partnered with the American Heart Association for over 20 years to put on the “Jump Rope for Heart” program to promote healthy and active lifestyles. CAHPERD will be 80 years old this year, so fittingly the goal was to organize 80,000 jumpers for this record attempt.

Aside from breaking the record, the real goal of this event was to promote healthy living, especially for today’s youth. With today’s economic situation, many schools are short on funds for physical education, so CAHPERD helped remind everyone how little it can cost to get kids active doing something like skipping rope.

“Overall it was a great day for our classes. The kids really kinda bought into this and have really enjoyed this event. Now that we’ve done this one time, we’re definitely planning on doing this again and adding it to our P.E. program,” Velarde added.

Due to the amount of participants involved in the record attempt, official results will not be available until later this week. Regardless of setting a record, the event aimed to spread active lifestyle awareness and raise much needed funds for physical education in California.
