Smiles And A Scarf

khts_givingback“Christmas is about giving to people who can’t have a Christmas,” said Rachael Odle.

It’s that thought process that has driven the 16-year-old Canyon Country resident to spend all her free time trying to make Christmas special for families in need.

Odle along with her mother Lauren McGuire, have spent the better part of 2009 purchasing and collecting presents and supplies for the Christmas season.

“She just gets so giddy shopping for the kids,” said McGuire about her daughter.  For her it’s about doing everything she can.”

Odle started helping those in need last year, and says it started when she heard that the Boys and Girls Club only had enough funding to help 15 families.  She decided to help and not only support the Boys and Girls Club but the Senior Center and Lutheran Social Services which runs a homeless service program in Santa Clarita.

Through her efforts, she was able to raise $4,000 to go towards the organizations.

This year she stepped up her goal and is hoping to raise $10,000.

In addition to raising money, Odle and Mcguire have put together backpacks for children, which include a stuffed animal, a throw blanket, a winter scarf, and other items.

The scarves have been personally made by the two and will go out to not only children but adults as well.  They are hoping to be able to make and give out 150 scarves.

To try and collect more money to allow Odle to reach her $10,000 goal, she will be in the Canyon Center on the corner of Whites Canyon and Soledad Canyon Road selling coupon books.

McGuire has compiled a list of ways the public can help make the holidays a little brighter for families in need:

  • Sponsor a child or senior for a fixed donation of $35.
  • Donate gift cards of any kind, especially grocery cards for any of the adults and fast food, movie cards, or any “cool” store for the teenagers.
  • Buy a copy of the Entertainment 2010 book for $25. There are movie discounts, online discounts, free items, etc.  Rachel will be selling them in the Canyon Center from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 19.
  • Donate money. Checks can be made out to Rachel Odle or to one of the organizations.
  • Donation a new or unused toy.
