Our Assemblyman Cameron Smyth publicly announced his opposition to Proposition 1A today, which, if passed by voters in a May 19th special election, would extend the state’s recent tax increases two more years.
[view:node_ad=5]”I voted against the initial tax increases when they were part of the budget in February and after talking with hundreds of my constituents, it has reaffirmed what I already believed,” Smyth said in a released statement. “Extending the largest tax increase in California’s history for an additional two years will only harm hard working Californians and not solve our financials crisis”
Proposition 1A is the most controversial in a series of propositions aimed at straightening out the state’s financial mess. While 1A includes the tax extension, it also carries a spending cap for the legislature, an idea that is popular with Smyth.
“Although I strongly support a spending cap, which is a provision of Prop 1A, the report from the Legislative Analysts Office further confirms my belief that raising taxes at any time, especially in a recession simply does not solve our problem.”
