Smyth Named Assistant Republican Leader For State Assembly

cameronsmythAssembly Member Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, today announced that he has been appointed by Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway, of Tulare, to serve in an important leadership role as one of the Assistant Republican Leaders for the 2010-12 legislative session.

“I’m honored to accept this position,” said Smyth, “and I look forward to working with Assembly Member Conway and the rest of her leadership team to help put California’s fiscal house back in order. As Assistant Republican Leader, I will embrace the opportunity to help get our message out to the people of California, and to help craft responsible policy aimed at putting people back to work. We have many difficult tasks ahead of us, but Connie has assembled a strong team that will work together for the best interests of our state.”

As Assistant Republican Leader, Smyth will have many different functions in the Assembly Republican leadership team. He will work directly with the Republican Leader to focus and frame the legislative debate at the State Capitol. Assistant Leaders also assist with articulating the Republican Caucus message in Sacramento and across the state, and help promote the goals of Assembly Republicans.

Smyth, who has held previous leadership positions as Caucus Chair and Republican Whip, has also been reappointed as Chair of the Assembly Local Government Committee by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez. Last year, Smyth became the first Republican chairman of the Local Government Committee in nearly fifteen years. As Chair of Local Government, Smyth has already joined Speaker Pérez in co-authoring legislation aimed at fighting corruption by public officials, such as that seen in the cities of Bell and Vernon in Los Angeles.

“Cameron Smyth has fought tirelessly to make government more honest and accountable to the people,” said Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway. “Bringing Democrats and Republicans together, he has fought hard to reform government and make it more efficient and effective for taxpayers. I am pleased to have Cameron as a member of my leadership team, and look forward to putting his reputation as a consensus builder to work for our party as we seek to end business as usual at the State Capitol.”
