Legislation to
include Elsmere Canyon within the Rim of the Valley Trail
Corridor has been introduced in Sacramento by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, co-authored
by its original presenter, Senator George Runner.

Runner’s 2008
legislation, SB 1180, was one of hundreds of bills left unsigned by Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger after a budget impasse in September.

The land, once
threatened with the possibility of becoming the world’s largest garbage dump,
is a protected open space area, thanks to two actions by local legislators: a
1996 federal law prohibiting federal forest land from being used for the
project and a 2004 action by Los Angeles County Supervisors which removed
Elsmere from the list of potential sites for landfills.

Smyth’s
legislation, AB110, would finish the circuit of open space parcels along the
Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor, which is administered by the Mountains
Recreation and Conservation Authority.
