“With every vote, we’re expanding the base of support for AB 1463,” said Smyth. “I’m pleased that so many of my colleagues, from both sides of the aisle, are coming together to recognize the sacrifice that our young men and women are making.”
The idea behind AB 1463 came from the case of Nicholas Laccabue , a Saugus High School senior who completed his graduation requirements in December, and recently completed boot camp at Camp Pendleton. His request to wear his dress uniform was initially denied, but ultimately granted after the principal and the Hart School District reversed their positions on the matter. Smyth met with Laccabue’s mother in February, and expressed his interest in authoring legislation dealing with the issue.
“Today’s bipartisan vote is a testament to the fact that this is not a partisan issue, but rather a way for us, as a Legislature, to show our thanks and appreciation for the commitment these students have made,” said Smyth.
AB 1463 now moves to the Senate Education Committee, where it will be heard later in the summer.
