Sometimes Being Last Is Best

The early bird doesn't always catch the worm.

Providence Holy Cross Hospital reported the birth of four babies on New Year's Day, January 1, the earliest having been born at 1:42 a.m.

Hospitals nation-wide have contests as to who will be the first baby of the new year, and in some cases, prizes like gift baskets of baby items are handed to the parents of the winner.

At Providence Holy Cross however, quite the opposite came to play, when the parents of the last baby born in 2008 received a special gift from H&R Block.

It is law that even if a baby is born at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, that baby has still technically been born in the previous year, and therefore, parents may claim a tax deduction for the entire year prior.

So, to congratulate the parents of the last baby of 2008, H&R Block, a tax preparation service presented the parents with a backpack of supplies for their new bundle of joy, and a reminder that come tax season, they'll be glad that being last sometimes comes with benefits.
