Santa Clarita Baptist Church will host two free concerts featuring the Australian group, Sons of Korah, on Saturday and Sunday.

Sons of Korah are a Christian-based musical group that combines multi-ethnic sounds with biblical psalms to produce a unique experience for listeners.

As a musician studying at a seminary, lead member Matthew Jacoby was interested in the psalms.

“I wanted to take this project on to see if we could give (the psalms) a new life,” Jacoby said. “I found that a really engaging artistic challenge and subsequently, incredibly spiritually enriching.”

Jacoby said the project started 18 years ago. The Sons of Korah released their first album, “Light of Life,” in 1999. Since then they have recorded and released five other albums: “Redemption Songs” (2000), “Shelter” (2002), “Resurrection” (2005), “Rain” (2008) and “Wait” (2011).

Their music is a hybrid of many different musical and ethnic styles.

It sometimes takes years to write music that captures the emotion and diversity of the psalms, Jacoby said.

“We just want to get it right,” he said. “The psalms are too precious to us for us to feel not quite happy with what we’ve done, so we put in a lot of work into making sure that we really nail those emotions and express them to the best of our ability.”

Just like their music, the members of Sons of Korah have changed and evolved over the years.

Today, Rod Wilson plays drums and percussion. Mike Avery plays the acoustic fretless bass and keys. He is also the band’s studio engineer and leading producer. Rod and Mike joined the Sons of Korah about 8 years ago.

The groups newest member, Bruce Walker, joined the band two years ago. Bruce plays resonator, mandolin, nylon string guitar and various other instruments.

“I feel like we’ve really come together quite providentially. We’ve never auditioned or anything like that,” said Jacoby. “It’s really been a matter of people coming together who have a real heart for the project and we’ve just found ourselves. It feels like providence when I think back on how it all came together. We’re doing God’s work and that’s how I like to see it.”

The Sons of Korah will be performing two free concerts at Santa Clarita Baptist Church on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 4, at 6 p.m. The church is located at 27249 Luther Drive in Canyon Country. For ticket information visit SCBC.cc.
