Power was knocked out in Newhall by an errant squirrel who got into an electrical box, causing an arc and darkening more than 2,800 customers’ homes and businesses near Valley Street and Lyons Avenue.
The initial “explosion” – caused by the arcing power – happened at 7:10 a.m., according to an Edison spokesman.

Fire officials responded to the scene, and found wires down in the street on Valley Street, but no fire or injuries. The street was closed and Edison was able to restore power to approximately half of the initially affected customers.
Crews are still working on the wires and have been able to restore all but 83 customers at this time. Restoration should be complete by 3:30 p.m.
