The California Department of Education (CDE) has issued its first Education Roundup featuring education-related announcements of public interest.

New Publication

CDE is offering a new online publication entitled “A Look at Kindergarten Through Grade Five in California Public Schools.” The publication is in an easy-to-reference format where all subjects are grouped together by grade levels, highlighting each content area and adopted California standards.

The publication provides insightful, relevant narrative overviews for each subject section and is designed to support California’s transition to the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English-language arts. Other sections link this information to instructional resources, assessment, accountability, universal access, and closing the achievement gap. Scholarship Winner

Seventeen-year-old Kaylee Yoshii of Mission Viejo is one of three American winners of the 2011 Ruta Quetzal-BBVA scholarship from the Ministry of Education of Spain. Kaylee is a junior at Laguna Hills High School in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (Orange County). Kaylee’s winning scholarship application was a 20-page historical research paper written in Spanish analyzing the 18th century bishop Martínez Compañón’s education reforms in Peru. The Ruta Quetzal BBVA is an academic and travel adventure. Winners receive a six-week study trip to Peru and Spain. The journey features a broad program of academic activities with a curriculum designed by the prestigious Madrid Complutense University. The generous scholarship is part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the CDE and the Ministry of Education of Spain that benefits students at no cost to the state. Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness Week

Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness Week is March 20–26. California coastal communities and parts of northern California will be participating in drills and live tests of the Emergency Alert System. School districts may download free materials from www.tsunami.ca.gov, including videos, brochures, lesson plans, posters, fact sheets, and emergency response procedures.
