State Law Enforcement Group Honors George Runner

Group names him “Outstanding Senator for 2008.”
Recognized for his strong commitment to probation issues and programs within the California Legislature, Sen. George Runner has been named the Outstanding Legislator of 2008 by the Chief Probation Officers of California.

“Senator Runner has been a public safety leader, authoring the Safe Neighborhoods Act and serving as a strong advocate for probation,” said CPOC President Jerry Powers. “We are proud to honor his commitment to incorporating probation into a comprehensive prison reform solution that alleviates overcrowding and uses evidence-based programs to reduce the crime rate across California.”

CPOC’s mission is to provide leadership in the mobilization, coordination and implementation of probation programs and provide for public protection including detention and treatment, victim services and the prevention of crime and delinquency; and to insure the provision of quality investigations and supervision of offenders for the Courts.

“It is an honor to be recognized by this outstanding group of people,” Runner said. “Probation officers are in the eye of the storm when it comes to public safety. They have the difficult duty of putting parolees on the right path and keeping them out of prison for good. Accordingly, they play a critical role in reducing crime and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”

Runner is a co-author of the Safe Neighborhoods Act, a November ballot initiative that takes a comprehensive approach to fighting gang and street crime in California.

Runner also co-authored California’s Jessica’s Law, which passed with overwhelming support by California voters in 2006. It created some of the toughest and most comprehensive sex offender management and control laws in the nation. He also authored the well-known Amber Alert in California, which has resulted in more than 100 successful reunions of parents with their kids
