California’s Department of Transportation has initiated a traffic engineering study on State Route 138 between Interstate 5 and the San Bernardino County line in response to a motion unanimously approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
The motion introduced by 5th District Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich proposed that the state implement technological advances and update cautionary signs by using solar power to improve safety on Route 138.
The 69-mile route is considered one of the most dangerous stretches of state highway, according to Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol.

“Over the years, the county has successfully advocated for improved safety measures including widening, adding lanes and improving turn signals,” Antonovich said in a statement. “More can still be done to make State Route 138 safer — including upgrades to the signage utilizing solar energy to power flashing lights that would improve the visibility and attention drawn to these signs.”
The state anticipates the study will be completed within the next three months, and results will be reported to the Board of Supervisors.
