Subscription Solicitors Not Benefiting Local ROP

The Wm. S. Hart Union High School District has received reports of teens going door-to-door selling newspaper subscriptions to help the local Regional Occupational Program (ROP) career technical classes.

The ROP program has not authorized such a fund-raising program and local ROP students are not benefiting, according to Jan Burns, ROP specialist.

“This happens every year,” Burns said, “and we usually don’t find out about it unless someone complains. One year, a solicitor called at the home of an ROP advisor, who called the police. These solicitors are misrepresenting themselves, and people sometimes buy from them because they think they are helping local schools.”

Buyers who respond to the solicitors are asked to make checks payable to LANG, which stands for Los Angeles Newspaper Group, publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News. Calls to the Daily News circulation department have not stopped the practice.
