Summer Closure On State Route 138

Road Closure for blasting at Mormon Rock

Caltrans has begun the summer closure of State Route 138 (SR-138) for the safety improvement project from June 11 through September 11, 2007.  SR-138 will remain closed during this period, 24 hours per day, seven (7) days a week, with no escorts.  The closure will take place from Hess Rd. west toward SR-2 (west of I-15).  Two separate summer closures of sections of SR-138 were planned for 2006/2007 to expedite the work.

The contractor will complete some blasting work to remove the existing roadbed over the next week.  The blasting will take place on SR-138 at Mormon Rock (east of Hess Rd. and just west of Lone Pine Canyon Road).  SR-138 will be closed to all traffic at this location for up to three hours for the blasts and earth removal.  Lone Pine Canyon will remain open for residents only.  Following is the schedule for the work:
[view:node_ad=5]Friday, June 15 from 12:00 p.m. (noon) to approximately 3:00 p.m.
Monday, June 18 from 12:00 (noon) to approximately 3:00 p.m.

Since the summer closure began there has been truck traffic on Largo Vista and Lone Pine Canyon into Wrightwood.  Caltrans has made arrangements with San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County to restrict truck traffic on these roads.  Truckers and non-resident motorists are advised to use the Caltrans recommended detour of I-15 north to Route 395, to SR-18 and go west to SR-138 (this detour may be used in reverse from Palmdale).  CHP and local law enforcement may be patrolling these roads and issuing citations to non-resident motorists and trucks.

Flagging will continue on SR-138 from Mormon Rock west to the Los Angeles County Line, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Night work will also take place on SR-138 Monday through Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. with flagging until the summer closure.  Minor delays are expected during the traffic control.

Motorists may sign up for updates on this project by emailing terri_kasinga@dot.ca.gov.  For updates on other state highway work in Riverside and San Bernardino county, please go to our website at caltrans8.info and go to News and Documents or CT Connect.  You may also call (866) 383-4631.
