Suspect Hammers Guard In Parking Lot

Guard attempting to help frustrated driver gets unexpected response.

A security guard was hit on the head by a transient in a county parking lot on Monday morning, sending the guard to the hospital and deputies in pursuit of his attacker.

The victim was working in the parking lot of the Los Angeles County Public Social Services office on Camp Plenty Road shortly after 8:30 a.m., when he saw a man trying to park his pickup truck. Noticing the driver seemed frustrated, the guard told him to leave his truck and go ahead into the office.

According to Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Hawkins, the driver grabbed a hammer from the truck and struck the victim on the head, running away from the office towards a residential area.

Hawkins said the victim’s injuries did not seem to be life-threatening, but he was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment. Deputies combed the area nearCamp Plenty Road and Sierra Vista Junior High School while a helicopter looked for the suspect, described as a male Hispanic in his early 20s wearing a beige hoodie sweatshirt, from overhead.

Around 9:45 a.m., Hawkins said that the suspect, Daniel Gomez, 23, walked up to his abandoned truck, where deputies had already found his identification, and turned himself in without incident. Gomez is being held at the Santa Clarita station on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
