Sweet Cake Charity Auction To Include Celebrity Judging Panel

khts_inthecommunityProvidenceMedical Center is proud to present The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project’s 3rd Annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction & Competition, judging panel for their upcoming event on April 9, 2011 at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia.

The celebrity panel will include Jim Moret, Chef David Lawrence, Cindy Schwanke, and Margarita and Raul Jr. Porto.

bio-jim-moretJim Moret, is chief correspondent for Inside Edition. Moret covers human interest stories as well as high profile celebrity news stories. Before joining Inside Edition, the veteran journalist was with CNN for nearly a decade, serving as co-anchor of the long-running Showbiz Today, as well as co-anchor of CNN’s main newscast, The World Today, and anchor of CNN’s News Night. Moret’s inspirational memoir, The Last Day of My Life, is his first book and has landed him appearances on Dr Phil, Today, Joy Behar and numerous other television and radio shows.

Dave_FinalChef David Lawrence, is the host and Creative Food Director of the hit web cooking series Good Bite, the author of the popular food blog Forking Delicious and his latest cookbook, Boy Eats World! A Private Chef Cooks Simple Gourmet, (Lake Isle Press).

Cindy-Schwanke-200x2000Cindy Schwanke, is the full time culinary instructor at College of the Canyons. She has helped grow the culinary program into a well respected, competitive culinary establishment. She has done various cooking workshops, community service projects and fundraisers to promote the college and the culinary program. Cindy has worked at Hyatt Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel, Smash box Studios, Spago restaurant and retail outlets. Cindy has her degree in Culinary Food Management. Her specialty is pastry and has won numerous medals in pastry competitions.

Owners of the famous Porto’s Bakery & Café, Margarita and Raul Jr. Porto will also be joining the judging panel. For more than 30 years the Porto family has created incredibly delicious and beautifully designed cakes and desserts. “People wait in lines to get into their bakery,” said Renee Kaehny, SCVYP Board Member.

“It should be a great night. We have great new sponsorships and we continuing to see such excitement amongst the community members!” said Kim Goldman, Executive Director for the SCV Youth Project. “Having Jim, Chef David and of course Cindy, is going to add some spice to the night, it will surely make for a memorable evening.”

The event will also showcase “Thelonius Dub”, featuring Santa Clarita’s own Lindsay Hough.

With an emphasis on building a fun and creative way to promote local companies, charities and schools, all are invited to design a specialty cake to promote their business, mission, logo, product or mascot. Cakes will be put on display for viewing and bidding. Cakes will be paired with unique gifts (trips, baskets, gift certificates, etc.,) creating an innovative and valuable auction item. Cakes will be awarded prizes in several categories including originality and creativity as well as the cake that raises the most money. The auction and judging will take place at a “cake” tail reception, at TPC at Valencia.

The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project is celebrating 10 years of successfully providing free services to teens in the Santa Clarita Valley. Since their doors opened in 2000, the Youth Project has assisted more than 32,000 local families, including 27,000 youth and 5,500 adults. In 2008/2009, with services on six high schools and seven junior high campuses, the SCV Youth Project provided more than 2,000 hours of service to over 1,000 young adults in the Santa Clarita Valley with serious life challenges, including depression, suicide, grief or loss, peer pressure and drug and alcohol abuse.

The Sweet Charity Cake Auction and Competition will take place on Saturday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at TPC in Valencia. Tickets for the reception are $40.
