Sweet Charity Cakes Auction Saturday To Support SCV Youth Project

Raising money to support the SCV Youth Project, the Sweet Charity Cake Auction and Competition will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m.at TPC Valencia.

This year, TV personality Jillian Barberie of “Good Day LA” fame will be one of the celebrity judges.

“It’s a unique opportunity for business owners to promote their business, and it’s also a great opportunity for the community to support a nonprofit that helps children facing issues that could affect anyone,” said Kim Goldman, executive director for the SCV Youth Project since 2005.

The SCV Youth Project helps kids facing such serious issues as drug/alcohol abuse, anger,
divorce, peer pressure, grief/loss, suicide, depression, etc., by offering them a number of services.

But it’s about more than just dealing with the most serious consequences, she said.

“It doesn’t have to be a life-changing event for the the Youth Project to make a difference,” Goldman explained.

“All of the normal stressors are what impact our families,” she said. “Children need a place to share and process the feelings that they have. All families are susceptible to anything happening.”

The 12-year-old program has assisted more than 34,000 local families, including 29,000 youth and 5,500 adults. Last year, the program provided more than 8,000 hours of community service.

Cakes will be awarded prizes in several categories, including Originality, Creativity, the cake
that raises the most money and, new  for this year, the Novice category, for those who have never designed a cake before.

And in the spirit of the project, the event is appropriate for the whole family, and all are welcome.

“There is still time to get your tickets and register your cake. For just $45, there couldn’t be a better, more creative option to spend a Saturday night with or without the kids,” said event chair Renee Kaehny.
