Sweet Charity Sugars Up For Big Night At TPC

cakeCARWhat do a typewriter, a cruise ship and a basket of garlic buns have in common? They all were made into cakes and entered into the SCV Youth Project’s annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction. This is just a sample of some of the amazing culinary art at what has been called the “sweetest event in all of Santa Clarita.”

It’s all for a good cause and brings local businesses and residents together for an evening of clean family entertainment.

This Saturday, the SCV Youth Project will be holding their fourth annual auction at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia. Businesses are invited to enter cakes that represent their product or mission in some way. The more elaborate or elegant the design, the better chance they have of impressing the celebrity and expert judges and placing in the competition.

Past years included entries from Princess Cruises, Realty Executives, Nissan of Valencia, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Rattler’s Barbeque, among many others. Guests have had the opportunity to view and bid on an array of amazing cake creations, including life-like animals (dogs, lions, sharks, etc), cruise ships and cars and even a sushi dinner, complete with rice and chopsticks.

cakeCAMERA“The winner last year was Maureen Benoit from Jill’s Cake Creations,” commented Youth Project Executive Director Kim Goldman. “She’s a photographer, so she did a camera on a tripod. Most of it was edible… It plugged into the wall, and she had her pictures that were streaming through the camera. I don’t know how they did it.”

The variety ought to be just as spectacular this year, according Goldman. At least 30 businesses have already registered cakes, which will be paired with additional auction items “that either bring people back into their business or support another cause or another business,” she said.

A special promotion is also available for guests at the auction this year. Every ticketholder will be entered into a drawing to win the newest iPad. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the event, at $25 each or $100 for five.

cakePURSEThe Youth Project is also offering a free ticket to the first 10 people who take pictures of Cake Auction banners posted around town and add them to the SCV Youth Project’s Facebook page. Those who don’t get their picture in the top ten can still purchase tickets online for $40.

Every dollar helps Youth Project reach out to local at-risk youths, helping them to become healthy and successful. Goldman added, “All of the proceeds go to serve our students here in Santa Clarita; 100% of our services are free to our students…so that our kids get a safe place to talk and share their feelings and get help on any issues that they’re faced with.”
