Symphony Looking For Boot-Scooters At BK Corral

Symphony takes over Kellar homestead for Western music fest.

Join supporters of the Santa Clarita Symphony from 6 to 10 p.m. June 21 as the front yard of Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar’s home is transformed into a mini western town featuring a general store, bandstand, and saloon reminiscent of the 1970’s television show “Gunsmoke.”

This event is the Symphony's largest fundraiser of the year with proceeds going to help underwrite the Symphony's programming and child outreach initiatives for the upcoming year.

“We are really going ‘whole hog’ in making this year’s event an event to remember,’” said John Dow, Symphony marketing director.   Highlights include:

Authentic Santa Maria Style BBQ.  “When we say ‘authentic’ we mean it,” said Dow. “Tri-tip, chicken and ribs will be grilled on site using true Santa Maria pits full of dried raw oak that infuses a wonderful smoky flavor. Santa Maria style BBQ is the most significant historical use of a grill west of the Mississippi. If you are unfamiliar with this process, it's really something to see.”

The evening’s entertainment — provided by Rattlesnake Slims and Lowes Music in Newhall —  will feature recording artist The McGrath Project band which boasts an all-star line-up of Gary McGrath, Teddy "Zig Zag", Tim Bogert, and Bryan Head, These musicians, who have worked with, or are members of, Bon Jovi, Bowling for Soup, Rod Stewart, Guns N' Roses, Michael Jackson, Vanilla Fudge, Billy Bob Thorton's band, and Carole King  will be performing Rock-a-billy and modern Country rock favorites, so don't forget to bring your dancing boots.

Also, sharing the bandstand will be several favorite Santa Clarita Symphony musicians, including Russian violinist Philip Vaiman, who will be kickin’ it up with a little Charlie Daniels Band.  It is also rumored that Elvis himself may make an appearance.

The general store will have a nice selection of vintage hand made cowboy shirts, including those designed by Nudie Cohn — the famous celebrity “Rodeo Tailor to the Stars” (including Elvis) — as well as a tack and saddle shop, courtesy of Gordon Mehterian, owner of Rattlesnake Slims.

Jamie Nudie, (granddaughter of Nudie Cohn) will be on hand for the event — as will her classic, 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Safari Wagon, complete with alloy rifles along the side of the vehicle, a set of horns on the front grille and the interior suited with rattlesnake hide designed by her famous grandfather.

“Over the years — like many of you — we have found this city to be rich in arts and entertainment and we are honored to share our stage with the Santa Clarita Symphony and be part of the contribution they are making to our community,” said Mehterian.  "As you can see", Dow added, "We're not your Father's Symphony."

Cost $100 “a head.” For reservations — yee haw! — RSVP to the Santa Clarita Symphony at (661) 284-6044. The Santa Clarita Symphony is a registered 501c(3) non-profit organization.  For information about the Santa Clarita Symphony visit
