Regular backups are a smart move

If you are not in the habit of backing up your data, you should start practicing today. Although Mac is a superb computer, it is still prone to crashes and data loss caused by hard drive problems. Should such issues arise, you can lose all your precious data, such as important docs, photos, videos, music, etc. Backing up all this data has a two-fold advantage – i) you can get all your data back in case of a hard disk crash; ii) when you back up your data, you can free a lot of hard disk space, which will allow your system to run smoothly.

Deleting old and duplicate files

This is more about having common sense than a habit. Our systems are usually filled with old files that we simply have no use of. For example, we often accidentally create duplicate files and forget to delete them. These files occupy hard disk space and may even slow down your system. Do yourself and your Mac a favour and delete these files. Check in on them on a regular basis. The specific file types to watch out for are images and videos you have edited, gifs, screenshots, music files that you downloaded several times because you liked the song but forgot where you saved it, etc.

Reduce the number of background apps and services

When you switch your Mac on, quite a few utilities, services and apps run automatically in the background. You may not launch them yourself, but they are still there, with or without you knowing. These apps usually exchange data with their servers on the internet, hogging a lot of hard disk space and RAM, causing an abrupt system slowdown right at the start-up. All you need to do is check the top navigation bar and find out how many icons are active there, other than your Wi-Fi and battery icons. The more the icons, the more the number of utilities running in the background. Another way to find resource hogs is look them up in the Activity Monitor. Simply closing them will help you right away. However, to shut them down for good you have to delete them from you Login Items. Next time you switch you Mac on they will not bother you. This will free your RAM, thus improving your Mac’s performance.

Running Disk Utility regularly

The Disk Utility is a built-in app you find in every Mac. It is quite basic, but it has a number of useful functions, such as repairing corrupt sectors on the hard drive, repairing disk permissions, etc. Make sure to run the Disk Utility at least five or six times a year. To launch it, go to the UTILITIES folder. If you feel that Disk Utility is not enough to keep your system fit and you need more versatile troubleshooting tool, look for some renowned maintenance apps that Mac users trust.
