Tesoro First Grader Hailed As Hero

kidherointerviewFirst grader Diego Pimental had lots of people cheering him on Friday morning at the Tesoro del Valle Elementary School awards ceremony, and most of them were in uniform.

The shy 7-year-old seemed nonchalant as he was summoned to the stage, surrounded by firefighters and a deputy sheriff. When his parents came up, the young man started beaming.

On May 7, Diego’s parents, David and Araceli, were out to dinner, leaving Diego and his young brother in the care of a babysitter. When the babysitter had a seizure, he called 911 and calmly answered the operator’s questions, all the while looking after his little brother.

His quick response to her distress and his control of the situation was something that caught the attention of the L.A. County Fire Department.

Not only that, it probably saved the babysitter’s life.kidherostephanie

“He is an extraordinary little boy,” Captain Joe Kinney told the crowd of students and parents. “He was in control, caring for his little brother and concerned about his babysitter.”

“It was a stressful situation,” said father David Pimental. “We got the call and got to our home where Diego and his little brother were playing on the sidewalk with the sheriff’s deputies. We’re extremely proud of him.”

After Diego was presented with a certificate from the County Fire chief, Principal Mary Post also pinned a special gold Principal’s Award to his collar.

“Not many people get this award,” she told him, smiling.
