State budget woes may hamper the progression of the project.
The City of Santa Clarita recently unveiled their new 40,000-square-foot skate park, but the California’s budget troubles have forced the city to postpone further phases of the sports complex project.
The completion of the skate park and the upcoming completion of a temporary dog park, basketball courts, and covered picnic areas will mark the end of most of phase four.
According to Rick Gould, director of parks and recreations for the city, the design of the gymnasium expansion, which would complete phase four, has been completed but construction of the facility has been placed on hold.
The additional features of the project, which include soccer fields, a BMX track and an outdoor amphitheater, have been placed on hold, and a construction date has not been set.
“Given the economy and all the cuts and everything, I just don’t see that (the completion of the next steps) being on the horizon right now,” said Glenn Bogna, project development coordinator for the Parks Department.
The city plans to complete all projects that have been started, but future construction plans are frozen.
“Were not funding any new major projects, nor are we moving forward on any major phases of Central Park, the Sports Complex or any other park construction,” said Gould.
A project that has been given the green light despite the freeze is construction on Discovery Park in Canyon Country, where grant funds have allowed for additional walking paths and turf.
