The Santa Clarita Cross Valley Connector Enters Final Phase

City set to begin work on final piece of important roadway.

[view:node_ad=5]This time next year, everyone in Santa Clarita will likely be counting down the days, minutes and hours until the grand opening of the highly anticipated completion of the Cross Valley Connector.

The roadway was planned to connect the 14 freeway at Golden Valley Rd. to the I-5 freeway at Highway 126 by way of a large multi-lane road through the center of town.

Most of the Cross Valley Connector is already in use today; Golden Valley Road extends from Highway 14 to Soledad Canyon Road, and Newhall Ranch Road zips drivers from Bouquet Canyon Rd. to the I-5.

The missing piece stands right in the middle, and includes a massive bridge over the Santa Clara River.

Tuesday night, the City Council authorized a $21 million contract for C.C. Myers to complete the final bridge and once and for all connect the two ends.

“This was a very significant award last night,” said City Engineer Curtis Nay.

How significant? This road project, at a price of nearly $245 million, will serve as the main east/west artery through Santa Clarita. It has been designed to carry a massive load of vehicles with relatively few traffic lights, and entire neighborhoods, retail and industrial parks have been planned around its existence.

The Cross Valley Connecter will provide a dedicated class 1 bicycle path and is predicted to greatly improve emergency vehicle response times.

But most importantly, it will offer an alternative to Soledad Canyon Road and Valencia Blvd. Furthermore, that alternative will be highly superior and traffic conditions should be drastically enhanced.

The Cross Valley Connector is scheduled to be completed by early 2010.

Nay told KHTS that City Hall is excited about nearing completion on the massive project.

“It’s been a long process,” he said. “And so yea, the mood has been very jubilant.”
