The Year To Come

This is a continuance of yesterday’s article in which we looked backward to major events that took place in 2006.

Now we will look to 2007.

The Cemex battle will not end. If last year’s fight was just to get the attention of the world and of Cemex, then look to this year to be even more important. Hopefully, the successes we were able to post last year will lead Cemex to the negotiating table, and rectify this situation once and for all. If not, expect an all out war. Our council had changed slightly, but nobody in city hall is going to give up on this issue.

Downtown Newhall will be transformed. People have been talking for years about Downtown Newhall’s redevelopment, and look for that to really heat up this year. A lot of options are on the table, including a martial arts museum. The city is 100% behind the redevelopment and once it really starts moving, some dramatic changes will be visible. It may not be the arts district they envision by 2008, but it will be headed in that direction, and the amount of people actually going there to see plays or to have dinner will most likely increase by a large amount.

The Council will take up Henry Mayo’s Expansion. This should happen sometime in January and will be ugly. The residents are determined to do everything they can to get a plan that will fit the size of that area. Count on several meetings devoted to it, and a high resident turn out at each one. Late nights will be a standard, but the hazy information that has so far come from Henry Mayo will undoubtedly be cleared up, and the council will decide whether or not the plan goes into action.

The council will have a wildcard. Will TimBen Boydston be just another council member? Don’t count on it. It will be interesting to see his perspective on issues the council will take up. As a placeholder, he is free to act without fear of risking his political future. Whether that proves to be a good thing or a bad thing will be seen next year, as all eyes will be on him. There won’t be anymore deadlock, but there will be a wild card…TimBen Boydston.
