Santa Clarita’s MacDonald’s Restaurants Donates $5000 to Theatre Project
The Theatre Project/SCV has secured McDonald’s Restaurants of Santa Clarita as its first Corporate Educational Sponsor. The generous donation of $5000 will help underwrite the cost of guest artists in Master Classes that TTP/SCV is sponsoring as part of the College of the Canyons Summer Theatre Institute. On Monday, June 11th, Mark Schutz, owner of the local McDonald’s franchise group, delivered the donation check as he visited theatre students in class on the first day of the summer session at COC.
According to Andrea Slominski, co-Producing Artistic Director of The Theatre Project/SCV, “When brainstorming what our contribution to COC’s summer program could be, we dreamed big, envisioning an intensive and interactive environment which would allow local students to get individualized attention and exposure to some of the finest theatre teachers in the theatre community.”
Co-Producing Artistic Director, Mark Salyer, said, “Once we committed to this program, we knew that we’d have to find a community-oriented, education-minded individual or company in our Valley to underwrite the significant costs associated with luring artists of this caliber.”
Sue Bozman, Dean of District Communications, Marketing and External Relations at College of the Canyons, stated, “I'm so very pleased for the Theatre Project to have support from McDonald’s and am truly glad that it will benefit students in our theatre classes at College of the Canyons. This is great news and is a real win, win, win situation for everyone, particularly for our students.”
Because of the generous donation of McDonald’s of Santa Clarita, The Theatre Project/SCV is able to bring master artists to the community and enhance COC’s successful summer theatre program. The two five-week long sessions will offer Master Classes focusing on everything from voice and movement to learning the business of agents, casting and cold reads.
Workshops will be led by such internationally-known experts as Jean-Louis Rodrigue (Alexander Technique), Will Kilroy (The Michael Chekov technique); voice therapist Joanna Cazden (vocal training); and Rene Urbanovich, Broadway performer Julia Gregory, and opera singer Carmen Tejada (musical performance). Acting workshops will be taught by actor and Broadway director Tony Abatemarco, Kate Steele, Susan Hinshaw, Mark Salyer and Andrea Slominski, among others. Annie Schwartz of Origin Talent will give a workshop on The Role of The Agent, and Emmy Award-winning actress Kathleen Noone will conduct a workshop on personal development in the entertainment business.
Each Theatre 190 Production Class will end in a showcase held in the Black Box Theatre at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of The Canyons.
"This is such a great opportunity for actors to study with amazing teachers and artists as part of COC's Theatre Department," says Salyer. "Most of these workshops would be cost-prohibitive for young actors, but with partners such as Mark Schutz and McDonald’s Restaurants of Santa Clarita, The Theatre Project/SCV is able to bring these great artists to the College so that students can participate at COC’s regular low tuition cost of $20 per unit.”
Auditions for the program were held in mid-May, with a select group of 80 budding actors selected to take part in the two sessions being offered.
