Speed

Greater the gear ratio, greater will be operational speed (RPM). For instance, if you choose a gear box in which the input gear contains more teeth than the output gear, then the output shaft will produce more speed.

Gear Arrangement System

Different gear systems have different types of gear arrangements. This involves efficiency and heat loss. Hence, you should choose one that is efficient (transmits more energy but with reduced loss of heat).

An efficient gear system is capable of converting more energy into torque. Another factor related to gear arrangement is the way the load is distributed in some type of gear boxes.

For example, in planetary gearboxes, the load is distributed among various planets (rings), this produces additional amount of torque. Therefore, choosing a gearbox that has more planets (gear rings) is beneficial as it will provide more torque.

Backlash

If you want your gearbox to work in reverse motion as well then you need to consider the backlash as well. It provides a rotatory motion in the outer shaft while keeping the input shaft still. It increases accuracy and positioning in machines.
