Torch Run Set For Thursday

Law enforcement takes to the streets for a good cause.

Crime-fighters will band together Thursday afternoon to do a little running in the streets, as the Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley Annual Torch Run makes its way to the Southern California State Games in Long Beach. Running alongside officers from the LA County Sheriffs, CHP and FBI will be athletes from the program.

Cheerleading along the route is encouraged.

  • The run starts at 3:30 p.m. at Pitchess Detention Facility with the torch carried by LA County Deputies from the custody division. They will proceed down The Old Road, stopping for a handoff at the CHP office (estimated time of arrival 4:05 p.m.)
  • The CHP will proceed south on The Old Road, turning east (left) on Rye Canyon Road, south (right) on Avenue Stanford, east (right) on Avenue Scott, south (right) on McBean Parkway, east (left) on Creekside Drive, south (right) on Auto Center Drive and east (left) on Magic Mountain Parkway to the Sheriff’s SCV Station at Valencia Boulevard
  • Deputies will carry the torch from the station, proceeding west (right) on Valencia Boulevard, turning on McBean Parkway to the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital driveway at Orchard Village Road.
  • FBI Agents will pick up the torch at the hospital and run south on Orchard Village Road to Lyons Avenue, where they will turn right into Orchard Village Park.

The Southern California Games are scheduled June 13-15 in Long Beach.

A special fundraiser for Special Olympics is being planned July 10, when the LA County Sheriff’s Academy will take over Town Center Drive and serve customers at BJ’s Brewery, Buca diBeppo, Salt Creek Grille and T.G.I.Friday’s. Families are invited to come out and join academy members for a unique Tip-A-Cop fundraiser. For more information, call 253-2121.
