Towsley Canyon Wine Tasting/Silent Auction Fundraiser

Santa Clarita, California (October 7, 2004) – Towsley Canyon, part of the Santa Clarita Woodlands, was ravaged by fire last October. It destroyed trail-markers, damaged vegetation and endangered wildlife. The much-loved park and habitat has been recovering, but is in need of some assistance to fund projects to help it flourish. To celebrate the woodlands recovery and help Mother Nature along, Friends of the Conservancy (Friends) will host a silent auction and wine tasting event to benefit the restoration effort and raise funds for continued programs. The event will be held on Sunday, October 24 at Towsley Lodge in Towsley Canyon, located at 24255 The Old Road, Newhall, California, from 3:30 – 6:30 pm. Brenda Kardock, volunteer and event coordinator for this event stated, “I love this park. I got hooked coming, on my first Native American Plant Hike! It is such a serene and inspiring place. After the fires, you could walk through Towsley and hear a pin drop: No birds chirping… no lizards scampering. The vegetation was completely charred and black. I wanted to get involved to help in the park’s recovery. It is so great to see the progress it’s making. The oak trees are amazingly green on the branches. It’s really a wonderful sight to see, because I know that nature is bouncing back! Now all we need is a little help with trail-markers and support for our hike programs to get everything back on track!”
Friends’ goal is to restore trail markers, fund roving docent/hike programs, and create interpretive materials to show the natural process of fire and its benefits on re-growth – making Towsley Canyon a little bit of wilderness that can safely be enjoyed by local residents. All funds raised at the event will be used in local Santa Clarita parks unless otherwise indicated by the donor.
The event is open to the public and admission is free. Complimentary cheese, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. Come check out the progress and plans for the park – the oaks are sprouting and the roots of the walnuts are starting to flourish. With people and nature working together, we can make the park an even more beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.
