Patrick Scott, 25, of Ontario, was killed when his 2013 white Honda Civic, which was heading eastbound on Highway 126, just east of Main Street, around 3:50 p.m. when the crash occurred.

California Highway Patrol officers suspect that Scott’s car changed lanes from the right to left, and in the process, the left-rear side of his car to collide with the front ride side of a 2012 Toyota Camry driven by Gustavo Zepeda, 27, of Valencia.

The collision caused Scott’s car to spin onto westbound Highway 126 traffic, according to CHP officers, striking a 2016 black Jeep Cherokee driven by Margret Colin, 21, of Oxnard, and Sara Shin, 25, of Oxnard. All three sustained major injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The crash caused both lanes of Highway 126 to be shut down for several hours Tuesday afternoon while a patient was airlifted from the scene. Eastbound raffic was re-opened around 6:40 p.m., and both lanes around 8 p.m.

All of the cars were traveling at or about the posted speed limit of 60 mph, according to the report. All of the vehicles’ occupants were wearing seatbelts, officers said.

CHP officials thanked motorists for their patience Tuesday and offered a caution:

“I wish to thank motorists in the Santa Clara River Valley for their patience (Tuesday), thank the residents of Piru for their tolerance of all the additional traffic… and remind everyone to drive safely,” said Lt. R.D. Commander of the Moorpark office. “Sadly, there will be an empty seat at the dinner table… a 25-year-old young man will not be coming home for the holidays.”

The CHP also offered a holiday reminder:

Millions of Californians will travel the road this Thanksgiving holiday weekend to visit with family and friends.  While this time of year is usually full of joy, it can be one of the deadliest on our roadways. To help motorists avoid tragedies, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will have all available officers on patrol during the Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

Although the number of people killed in traffic collisions during last year’s Thanksgiving weekend was down from 2014, tragically 35 people died in collisions in California. Of the 17 vehicle occupants killed within CHP jurisdiction, 41 percent of them were not wearing seat belts.

“Buckling up is simple and the most important safety measure you can take to protect yourself in a collision,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “Seat belts save lives and prevent injuries. Do not put your own life at risk, or the life of your family or friends.  Buckle up.”

Nationwide, more than half the drivers and passengers killed in collisions are not wearing seat belts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that seat belts saved the lives of 12,802 passenger vehicle occupants in 2014.

The MEP begins at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 27. During the MEP, CHP officers will educate motorists and enforce traffic safety laws throughout the state to ensure everyone has a safe holiday.

The CHP reminds motorists to travel at a speed that is safe for conditions, avoid driving distracted, and designate a non-drinking driver for the safety of everyone on the road.  Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday, the CHP made more than 1,000 arrests for DUI. The public is encouraged to report unsafe or impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
