Christine May, 29, of Lancaster, was killed when the compact car she was in was struck by a silver truck around 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29 in Santa Clarita.

Deputies are still investigating the nature of the crash to determine the official cause; however, their initial investigation suggested May’s husband might have entered the roadway illegally, causing the crash. The husband’s identity was not immediately available.

Investigators reiterated Thursday they have yet to make that determination official as the report is being reviewed.

He has not been cited for any violation at this time, according to investigators. After the crash, he was also transported to the hospital for the treatment of serious injuries.

Coroner’s officials said they have not yet determined the official cause of death, as there has not yet been a medical examination of the decedent.

As the driver was not charged in the initial crash, officials now have up to one year to present any potential charges from the crash to the District Attorney’s Office, which would then have the discretion to charge or dismiss the potential case.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Unit.

The scene was being taped off while deputies investigate the nature of the crash at approximately 9:30 a.m. No one had been taken into custody as of this story’s publication, according to officials.

Two vehicles were involved, four people were injured, and three were transported — one person was in full arrest during transport, and reportedly died at the hospital. One person sustained light injuries and two others sustained moderate injury.

A truck collided with the driver’s side of a small white sedan, however, what caused the crash is under investigation.

No other information was available at this time regarding the identities of those involved or the suspected cause of the crash.

The city of Santa Clarita has been working with the Sheriff’s Department and CHP official to increase awareness on the road and safe driving habits, in response to an uptick in serious crashes throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

The state also passed legislation to crack down on distracted driving in response to an increase in crashes for that reason.

A collision report indicates in 2015, an average of more than a collision a week, 58 total, were reported on a stretch of Soledad Canyon Road between Whites Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, the highest total for any one areas among several highly trafficked zones that were analyzed.

There was one fatal collision last year in that stretch. And thus far, 2016 has seen two fatal vehicle versus pedestrian collisions on Sierra Highway near Soledad.

The other top stretched for collisions in 2015 included Soledad from Valley Center to Camp Plenty, 51; Bouquet Canyon Road from Magic Mountain to Valencia, 35; Newhall Ranch, from Bouquet to Golden Valley Road, 32; Valencia, from Rockwell Canyon Road to McBean Parkway, 27; and about a half-dozen other highly trafficked stretches throughout the SCV.

In the last two years for which complete data is available, 2014-15, Santa Clarita saw a 14 percent increase overall in vehicle collisions and a 24 percent increase in pedestrian-involved traffic collisions. The city also experienced a nearly 20 percent increase in its population over the last five years, through growth and annexations.
