Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies are investigating a fatal crash on Copper Hill Drive as a possible DUI, according to authorities.

Deputies are still investigating the circumstances surrounding what caused the head-on crash on Copper Hill Drive and Mcbean Parkway, which resulted in one death and two critical injuries.

KHTS has learned officials expect the two involved who were critically injured to survive their injuries.
Sheriff’s Station officials are investigating whether a 24-year-old Hemet man, who died at a local hospital from injuries sustained in the crash, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Deputies cannot confirm these reports until the Coroner’s Office conducts blood work from the decedent and reports back to the SCV Sheriff’s Station, which could take four to six weeks, according to officials.

The fatal head-on collision involved a Chevrolet Suburban and a GMC Yukon, around 8:46 p.m. Friday, May 5.

One person was killed and two other are in critical condition after the crash, which required a total of three people to be extricated from the cars using the Jaws of Life.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a 24-year-old man from Hemet, was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 23-year-old Santa Clarita Valley woman was transported to the hospital, according to officials.

The driver of the other vehicle was a 20-year-old man from Santa Clarita Valley. He was also transported to the hospital.

Traffic on Copperhill Road, near McBean Parkway, was shut down for several hours Friday night, and deputies were still investigating the scene as of 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic investigators continue to look into the circumstances involving the collision. No further information is available at this time.
