The two men were traveling southbound in a 1995 GMC pickup truck on Lake Hughes Road south of Warm Springs Road at about 7:45 p.m. Friday evening. The driver, described as a 65-year-old man from Tipton, began to drift off of the west edge of the road onto the dirt shoulder.
He overcorrected, according to a California Highway Patrol press release, turning the vehicle counter clockwise across the northbound lane and into a dirt embankment on the edge of the road.
The vehicle fell 250 feet down the rock hillside and landed on its side about 40 feet above the bottom of the gorge.
The driver, who has not been identified pending next of kin notification, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
The passenger, Alvaro Avila, 39, of Van Nuys, suffered a broken pelvis and internal injuries, according to the CHP release.
Avila escaped the vehicle but was not rescued until a concerned citizen noticed fresh tire friction marks along the roadway at about 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Emergency personnel airlifted Avila to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
