California Highway Patrol officers are in the initial stages of investigating this morning’s crash, which they suspect began when a piece of metal either fell from a big rig or was sent airborne by a big rig and then thrown through the windshield of a Honda Accord.
The Accord, which was driven by 17-year-old girl, was heading northbound in I-5 around 8:45 a.m. when the metal debris struck the car and caused the driver.
The front-seat passenger, also a 17-year-old girl, attempted to take over control of the car after the driver was incapacitated by the flying debris. She grabbed the steering wheel and managed to pull over the car, and in doing so side-swiped two big rig trucks, according to the initial CHP report. There was also a 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in the back seat of the car.
All of the parties involved in the crash were cooperative, and there were several witnesses, according to CHP officials.
No one else in the accord sustained significant injuries, according to officials. One of the big rig drivers was hospitalized as a result of the crash.
Officers are looking into the cause and the nature of the initial debris, officials said.
