Utilizing the Golden State Chokepoint Relief Program, Supervisor Kathryn Barger is proposing funds be allocated in order to create capacity and safety improvements in the form of truck lanes and Highway Occupancy Vehicle Lanes (HOV) on the I-5.

“A big part of this for the county is the carpool and truck lanes and extending those,” said Victor Lindenheim, executive director of the Golden State Gateway Coalition.

Additionally, the letter signed by all five L.A. County Supervisors would call upon the Infrastructure For Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant applications to include provisions for road and bridge improvements on The Old Road.

“The other part is relieving some of the congestion by working on the bridge on the Old Road,” continued Lindenheim. “That bridge, that’s just north of Magic Mountain that crosses over the Santa Clara River, needs to be redesigned, rebuilt and widened as part of the project.”

These two projects had been identified by Metro, in partnership with Caltrans and local jurisdictions, as areas that would not only be competitive applications for INFRA funding, but are also in great need due to the heavy construction projects on the freeway that greatly impact traffic.

“If the grant is successful, we’ll have more money in the pot to improve our roads and make them safer,” said Lindenheim. “We had 14 letters from local organizations and community leaders written in support of the US Department of Transportation Application to make our roads better.”
