The collision occurred on the southbound Via Princessa on-ramp to the 14 Freeway at approximately 11:35 p.m., according to a CHP release. The driver was a 26-year-old male from Sylmar who has yet to be identified by law enforcement officials.

The driver collided with a metal guardrail at a high rate of speed, causing him to be ejected from the white Honda he was driving. While the investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, officials stated that the high rate of speed is expected to be a contributing factor.

The Honda caught fire after the initial collision, prompting the Los Angeles County Fire Department to dispatch two units to the scene at 11:41 p.m., according to Melanie Flores, Supervising Fire Dispatcher for the LACoFD. However, the fire was not the cause of the driver’s death.

“The person was ejected from his vehicle, and actually died because of that, not because of the fire,” Flores said.

As a result of the crash, the Via Princessa on-ramp was shut down for four hours, according to the CHP release.

  1. Hi so last night when the car accident on 07/28/2018 happened I was sitting on my balcony in the town homes right near the on ramp and heard it happen. Me and 3 of my room mates took off to the crash. When we got to it we stopped traffic under neath the on ramp because of debris falling from the car. We tried to get to the car to see if the person was okay but we couldn’t get past the gates. As we were trying to get over one of them the car exploded. Large parts of the car including the very heavy medal rims came flying over the railing but luckily 2 of my room mates still had the traffic stopped by standing in the cross walk. The whole thing was very disturbing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
