Two people were initially reported dead on arrival Thursday evening after the sedan collided at high-speeds into the back of a semi-truck, resulting in both vehicles catching fire on the northbound I-5 in Newhall.
At 7:30 p.m. Santa Clarita Valley dispatchers received a call for a traffic collision involving fire and persons trapped on the northbound I-5 just south of Calgrove Boulevard in Newhall, according to officials.
“When units arrived on scene the sedan was fully involved in flames and the trailer of the semi was on fire,” said Michael Pittman, dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “Two people in the sedan were pronounced dead on scene and the semi truck driver refused medical aid.”
The traffic collision also resulted in a quarter acre brush fire which was quickly knocked down.
“The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the big rig,” said Officer Moises Marroquin, with the California Highway Patrol.
A Sig Alert was issued at 8 p.m. closing all lanes on the northbound I-5, except for the No. 1 lane, for an unknown duration.
