California Highway Patrol officers are still investigating what caused a Toyota T-100 truck to crash into the center divider of the 5 Freeway, just north of the Roxford Street offramp, around 4:24 a.m.

The driver of the truck reportedly was “spun out,” with the vehicle facing sideways, blocking the HOV lane.

Less than five minutes later, the CHP Traffic Management Center began receiving calls regarding a report of a Harley Davidson motorcycle that had hit the truck. There were no injuries reported from the driver of the truck. It’s unclear if the owner of the vehicle was in the truck at the time of the crash.

By 4:30 a.m., a passing LAPD officer stopped at the scene and tried to administer aid to the 53-year-old motorcyclist, then reported to city Fire Department personnel that the man was not breathing.

“The very first call we got was from an LAPD officer on scene, who reported the location as south of Balboa Boulevard,” according to fire officials.

The southbound 5 Freeway was completely shut down by 4:35 a.m., when fire arrived on scene. All but two lanes, the Nos. 4 and 5 lanes, were closed until 7:45 a.m., when all lanes were re-opened.

The motorcyclist was listed as a 53-year-old Lancaster man. No other information was released pending the notification of the next of kin, by officials with the Coroner’s Office.

  1. 2nd motorcycle fatal accident in a few days, a man was killed on 126 in Castaic also a few days ago. It is crazy out there, the road rules are not the priority in the 126 accident, Not sure what was the cause of the 5 south spin out. Pray for the families of the lost loved ones.

  2. The 14 fwy is out of control with drivers that thi.k they can drive on the shoulders of the fwy south bound between Sand Canyon, Via Princessa and Golden Valley. And a lot of people with only 1 person (driver) using the diamond lane. And driving wreaklessly. Know wonder there is so many accidents . Please drive safely!

  3. Drivers are multi tasking. Texting, taking videos, reading a book or looking at a map on the steering wheel, eating cereal, putting mascara on & the one that shocked me the most was a woman shaving her legs while driving! No one is safe out there & guess what?! All adults doing these stupid things while driving. I want to get home safely as I’m sure you all do too! Please stop it!!!!!
