4:10 p.m.: Fire and law enforcement officials held a press conference Sunday afternoon to give the public more information regarding the crash.
“At approximately 1:50 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department received a call for an aircraft in distress,” said Patrick Butler, Assistant Chief for the Los Angeles Fire Department. “Fire department arrived on scene, and they found a single-engine plane had crashed.”
Several witnesses arrived before firefighters and attempted to aid the downed pilot, according to Butler. Fire officials initiated CPR on the trapped pilot once they arrived on scene, Butler said, but they were unable to save the pilot.
“It appears the pilot had an in-flight emergency,” Butler said.
The pilot initially looked like he was going to try and land on the freeway, according to on-scene witnesses, but after seeing the congested traffic flew his plane into the nearby field.
The exact nature of the pilot’s in-flight emergency is still unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board has taken charge of the investigation.
The aircraft itself was registered locally, Butler said.
3 p.m.: The pilot of the aircraft was killed as a result of the crash, according to LAFD officials.
No other injuries were reported.
