Two motorist were riding in a U-Haul truck traveling north on the I-5 when it overturned off the freeway and became stuck, requiring extrication from their vehicle at the lower crossover just north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic.
Los Angeles County Fire Department received the call just before 7 a.m. and arrived on scene shortly after.
When first responders arrived they found a white U-Haul truck overturned off the road and on it’s side with two people trapped inside, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.
Several pieces of equipment were needed to conduct the rescue mission including a helicopter which was canceled, said Cheryl Sims, Supervising Fire Dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The rescue took about one hour to complete, according to officials.
A tree possibly caused the two people to be pinned in their vehicle, said Officer Peter Nicholson, with the California Highway Patrol.
“A white U-Haul truck rolled over to a grass area and got stuck,” said Nicholson. “Two parties trapped in a truck that went over the side.”
The California Highway Patrol shut down traffic shortly along the I-5N to assist the rescue efforts.
Caltrans needed to cut down a tree in order to get the two individuals out of the vehicle, according to Nicholson.
In addition to the tree, 80 feet of barbed wire fence was damaged along the I-5N due to the collision.
The crash caused the driver and passenger to suffer minor injuries and they were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, according to CHP.
The incident was still an active scene with Caltrans crews cleaning up the debris from the collision as of 11:45 a.m. on Sunday.
No cause for the collision has been determined at this time.
