Victim Of Fatal Rollover Crash At Rio Vista Elementary Identified

The victim of a fatal off-road vehicle crash at a Canyon Country elementary school last week has been identified, according to Coroner’s officials.

George Alcala, 36, of Lancaster, has been identified as the victim of a rollover crash at Rio Vista Elementary on Jan. 2 which also injured one other person, said a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

The crash was reported on the 27000 block of Honby Ave as a traffic collision with a person trapped, according to Gustavo Medina, inspector with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“When units got on scene, they reported no people were trapped,” Medina said. “Firefighters did request a second paramedic squad and ambulance for a second patient.”

One person was pronounced dead at the hospital after being ejected from the vehicle, said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The victim, described as a Hispanic male, was not wearing a seatbelt or a helmet, added Miller.

The condition of the second passenger is unknown as of Monday, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

Witnesses at the scene reported the two victims were driving in circles through the school parking lot before the crash occurred.

The victim was not an employee of the school, said Saugus Union School District officials.
