Golden Valley Road was the most recent target for motor deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to increase speeding enforcement, where deputies issued dozens of citations in just one week, according to officials.

During the week of Dec. 24, over 40 citations were issued for unsafe speed just on Golden Valley Road alone, according to Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Deputies said motorists gave a variety of reasons as to why they were exceeding the speed limit,” said Miller. “Some blamed the road for their speeding, because they said it went downhill.”

However, Sgt. Billy Lynch of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station noted he doesn’t buy into any of these excuses.

“That is no excuse for speeding. There’s something they can use — they’re called brakes,” Lynch said.

Law enforcement officials that issued the speeding citations on Golden Valley Road reported most of the drivers cited were traveling over 80 mph — 30 miles over the posted speed limit.

The area of Golden Valley Road between Sierra Highway and Centre Pointe Parkway is where the majority of speeding occurs, according to Lynch.

“Starting in January of 2017, we started doing more enforcement on this part of Golden Valley because we have noticed drivers are not slowing down on this part of the road,” Lynch said.

Sheriff’s officials suspect the reason for this is because that particular stretch of Golden Valley Road has a downhill descent and is heavily used by commuters.

On the night of Oct. 7, 2017, Katie Evans, a 37-year-old mother of six, was killed on Golden Valley Road after visiting her prematurely born twin daughters in the hospital. Her car was struck by the vehicle of a 21-year-old female driver who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, according to officials.

Less than a month later at the intersection of Golden Valley Road and Sierra Highway, 67-year-old Marie Antoinette Davis was killed after a truck crashed into the back of her car, pushing her vehicle in front of an oncoming bus.

While speed was a factor in the collision that killed Davis, it was a secondary cause, said Sgt. Scott Shoemaker of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“People just need to slow down and be more patient,” Shoemaker said. “If you are in that much of a hurry, you need to just leave earlier.”
