The operation will include extra deputies patrolling areas where motorcycle crashes frequently occur, and cracking down on violations made by drivers in cars and on motorcycles.

Collision data shows the main causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include unsafe turning, speeding and driving under the influence, committed by both drivers and motorcyclists, according to Sheriff’s Department officials.

Operations like this are aimed at curbing a rise in motorcycle deaths. Over the course of the past three years, motorcycle-involved collisions have resulted in 1,332 fatal and injury crashes throughout Los Angeles County.

Safety tips for motorcycle riders – See and Be Seen:

  1.  Use your lane position to increase visibility; change lanes only when there is ample room
  2. Match your speed to surrounding traffic
  3. Always wear a DOT compliant helmet and brightly colored, protective clothing
  4. Ride with lights on during daylight hours
  5. Riders are urged to get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program

Safety tips for drivers – Share the Road:

  1. Look twice for motorcyclists, especially when entering the roadway, turning or changing lanes
  2. Be aware that motorcyclists are allowed in HOV lanes unless prohibited by signage

Information and training locations are available at this website or by calling (877) RIDE 411 (877-743-3411).

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The message to all drivers and motorcyclists is: share in the responsibility and do your part by safely “sharing the road.”
