The Imagining Our Transportation Future Town Hall meeting is planned to be held from 6- 9 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Valley Municipal Building, 14410 Sylvan Street in Van Nuys.
“It’s really important for us to get the word out about our needs up here in the northern portion of the region,” said city of Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean, who is also a board member for the San Fernando Valley Council of Governments. “The more that we are able to show support for what we think we need, the more we will be able to make an impact when these projects are funded.”
Officials with The San Fernando Valley Council of Governments, LA Metro Board and Move LA will be at the event. Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Los Angeles County Councilmember Paul Krekorian and Glendale City Councilmember Ara Najarian are planning to attend the event.
“The supervisor’s efforts are to create and ensure that we have a regional transportation system,” said Tony Bell, spokesman for Antonovich. “Any tax dollars that are spent, are spent on a regional approach to help reduce congestion.”
The meeting will examine public transit issues and transportation investment alternatives facing the Santa Clarita and San Fernando areas, according to a news release. LA Metro is currently moving forward with its Long Range Transportation Plan update and is considering a transportation funding measure that may be placed before voters.
“We need to make sure our voices are heard so when the Metro board decides to fund projects, they understand our needs,” McLean said. “Areas like the I-5 corridor along with the SR-14 corridor are extremely busy. We need to make sure we get the upgrades funded now, sooner than later.”
McLean is also looking to have funding for more Metrolink trains.
“The time frame (between trains) is spread so far apart. You can’t really get to work and get back here during the times you need,” McLean said. “We’re awaiting a new station at the Bob Hope Burbank Airport for the Antelope Valley link. We need to make sure that it continues to be funded and built, and to get enough trains to accommodate people who wish to take flights. This is the first time for people in the Antelope Valley can take a train straight to the airport.”
