A SIG-Alert has been issued for the right lane of the southbound I-5 in Gorman after a big rig truck carrying 6,000 gallons of condensed milk drove off the side of the freeway Monday morning, officials said.
At around 4:48 a.m. Monday, officials with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office received reports of a vehicle over the side of the road roughly a quarter mile south of Smokey Bear Road along the southbound 5 Freeway, according to officials.
“Our first unit was on scene within two minutes,” said Sgt. KJ Pack with the CHP Newhall Area Office.
When they arrived on scene, CHP officers found that a big rig truck carrying a tank full of condensed milk had travelled off the road and down the west side of the freeway, according to officials.
“There were no injuries to the driver,” Pack said.
While the incident ultimately took place off of the freeway, a SIG-Alert was issued for the right lane of the southbound 5 Freeway at around 6:20 a.m. so that the truck could be properly removed, according to officials.
“In order for us to recover it, the load will have to be unloaded,” Pack said. “When we go to get it out, we’ll most likely have to close two lanes.”
No milk spilled as a result of the incident, preventing a potential hazardous material response, according to Pack.
“If milk gets into the water supply, we’d have to call for a hazardous material response,” Pack said. “(Milk) displaces the oxygen in the water, and the fish can’t breathe because of that.”
The SIG-Alert was still in place as of 12 p.m. Monday.
