A big rig truck hauling milk overturned on the southbound I-5 freeway near Calgrove Blvd Monday night, backing up traffic in the Santa Clarita Valley well into Tuesday morning.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene at 10:22 p.m. Monday and observed milk leaking from the big rig, which had gone over the side of the freeway and down an embankment, according to CHP officials. The driver was not injured.
CHP advised a road closure for clean up efforts, issuing a SigAlert for the No. 3 and 4 lanes overnight and into Tuesday morning.
For 13 hours, Caltrans workers cleaned up the spill and replaced damaged K-rails that were scattered on the interstate due to the collision, while several tow trucks worked to upright the overturned big rig and pull it up from the embankment.
As of 6:14 a.m. Tuesday, traffic on the I-5 south was already backed up to Magic Mountain Parkway, with alternate routes like the Old Road and Newhall Avenue bumper-to-bumper.
By 8:45 a.m., the I-5 south was backed up all the way to Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic.
The No. 3 and 4 lanes were re-opened and the SigAlert cancelled at 11:43 a.m.
