An underground high voltage vault in the sidewalk on Lyons Avenue between Avenida Rotella and Peachland Avenue in Newhall exploded shortly after 3:30 p.m., forcing concrete up from the ground and knocking out power around the area. No one was injured in the incident, but sheriff and fire officials responded to the area until Edison crews could come and make repairs.

In addition, failed equipment in the 28000 block of Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic knocked out power to 1,500 customers shortly after 1:30 p.m., but power was been restored to all but three customers by 5 p.m. According to Edison spokesperson Anna Fructos-Sanchez, power is expected to return to Kindercare, the Los Angeles County Public Works facility and adjacent parking lots lights by 9 p.m. tonight.
