UPDATED 2:45 p.m. – Power has been restored to several hundred customers, including the KHTS studios, but approximately 50 customers are still awaiting restoration.

Custodian Kevin Kane, an employee at Sierra Vista Junior High School, received an electrical shock when tree trimming crews dropped a branch causing a power surge that knocked out power to the surrounding neighborhood and businesses.

Hart District spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said that crews were trimming trees near the school on Camp Plenty Road when a branch fell and caused a power line to sag and connect with a metal chain-link fence. The power from the wire surged, knocking Kane off a platform near a portable classroom.

Kane did not lose consciousness, and paramedics treated him at the school, but he was taken by private vehicle to an urgent care health facility in an abundance of caution. Pinsker said he appeared to be in good condition.

The tree-trimming crews, from Stay Green, Inc. were contracted by the City of Santa Clarita.

Students at the Junior High will be released at their normal time. Parents should pick up students behind the school on Pleasantdale or in front of the school on Stillmore.

Power went out for approximately 2,100 Edison customers, according to Edison spokesman Steve Conroy. Approximately 50 customers remain without power, which cannot be restored until Edison  and state worker safety investigators can photograph and document the circumstances of Kane’s injury. Once this investigation is complete, which is not expected to take more than two hours, power will be restored.

Businesses and homes in the North Oaks area of Canyon Country were plunged into darkness around 11:55 a.m. when the transformer went out, causing a power surge that blew out a circuit.

Power at KHTS studios went out with an audible “bump”  A similar situation was reported from Canyon High School, where Assistant Principal Jan Hayes-Rennels said it sounded like an earthquake rolling through the school. Power was quickly restored to the high school.

Along with the radio station, County offices at Camp Plenty Road and Soledad Canyon and the Canyon Center shopping center on Whites Canyon Road were dark. Businesses across Soledad Canyon were untouched by the outage.
