Trucks Slip On Black Ice, Close Highway

chplogoA multi-vehicle accident just before midnight Wednesday caused by black ice resulted in three people going to the hospital and a closure of the eastbound 138 just west of The Old Ridge Route Road.

The problems started at 11:45 when Paul Rebaric, 53, of La Habra, was driving his 2008 Peterbilt big rig eastbound on 138 and hit a patch of black ice. He lost control of the truck, causing it to jackknife and stop within both the east- and westbound lanes of the road. Charles Hensley, 58, of Newhall, was driving a 2005 Peterbilt rig westbound on the 138 when he saw the disabled truck and tried unsuccessfully to stop. He hit Rebaric’s truck, left the roadway on the north side and his truck came to rest on its right side.

Jose Ramos, 25, of Riverside was driving his 2008 Peterbilt tractor trailer eastbound on the 138 and saw that the roadway was blocked. In an attempt to avoid the other trucks, he steered his rig off the roadway to the south, colliding with a barbed wire fence on Tejon Ranch property and came to a stop in the dirt shoulder.

Los Angeles County Fire Captain Thomas Stukey, 42, of Santa Clarita, was responding to the collision and stopped his 2005 Ford F-550 at a 45-degree angle partially on the right shoulder and partially blocking the eastbound side of the 138. He saw a 2004 Cadillac Escalade driven by William Blaurock, 56, of Las Vegas, approaching his vehicle from the east, put his truck in reverse and began traveling backward to avoid a head-on collision. The left side of the Escalade sideswiped the left side of Stukey’s truck.

A passenger in the Escalade, DeEtta Collier, 50, also of Las Vegas, sustained moderate injuries and Hensley and Rebaric both sustained minor injuries. All three were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Neither alcohol or drugs appear to be a factor in the collision. The incident is still under investigation.
